My name is Alexis Byrnes and I am a professional illustrator who specializes in narrative illustrations. I graduated from The New Hampshire Institute of Art in 2016, with a bachelor’s degree in Illustration and fine arts. Additionally, I am proficient in all aspects of Art and design which include painting, drawing, etching, printmaking, digital creative programs and scratchboard.
I believe my strongest ability is in scratchboard, however, I am also skilled in pen and ink, three dimensional modeling, etching, painting and printmaking. My style can range from a traditional rendering to a series of sharp jagged edges and curved lines, hatching and gesture work. However, recently I have been working towards cleaning and organizing my lines into simple forms, while keeping the texture of the piece and ensuring anatomically correct renderings.
My wish as an artist is to blend both old and new styles, to be able to communicate old stories and themes with a contemporary voice reaching new generations. I have always been inspired by nature, classical stories, folk-lore and legends. I am greatly influenced by both the Art Deco and the Art Nouveau movements, as well as old monolithic stories. As a creator of art, these stories have always captured my imagination and I feel society is still able to learn from these archaic tales and legends. I take inspiration from these stories so when I illustrate, I draw from these myths of heroes and monsters while conveying them through the sleek style of the modern age with some contemporary flair.
